Can You Resize a Ring? Professional Jeweler Guidelines

Purchasing a ring that doesn't fit perfectly can be disappointing, but many rings can be resized by a professional jeweler. However, the resizing process depends on the ring's design, metal type, and detailing.

Resizing Methods

To size a ring down, the jeweler cuts a small section from the band, joins the ends, and polishes the joint. To size a ring up, the jeweler can stretch the metal slightly or add a small piece of matching metal to the band. Resizing is typically limited to two sizes in either direction to maintain the ring's structural integrity.

Metal and Design Limits

Resizing is possible for soft metals like gold, platinum, and silver. Hard metals like titanium, tungsten, and cobalt cannot be resized. Additionally, rings with pave diamonds or patterns around the entire band (eternity bands) cannot be easily adjusted without altering the design.
